Wednesday 4th Dec saw the Gosport Branch Submariners Association hold their Christmas social at the RNA Gosport. Over eighty members, partners and guests, including some members of the Portsmouth Branch, enjoyed an enjoyable start to their festive season.
The evening kicked off with a welcome by our Chairman Steve Thorpe MBE, who ran through the programme for the evening and explained that the aim of the evening was for everyone to have a wonderful time, and that, although the evening was funded by the Gosport branch, there would be fundraising on the night for the Chairman’s charity, Elson Heroes, and the branch widows. He added that £100 of the funds raised would go to the Sea Shanty Band (Rocks N’ Groynes) charity “Children with Cancer”.
After a few drinks the members and guests then tucked into a wonderful buffet provided by Sue Wallis of Buffet on a Budget. Sue was a PO WRN Steward from 1979-2001.
A presentation was also made to Keith Davison who has served at the RNA for 23 years, a small token was given to him from the branch as an appreciation of his service.
The audience then sat back and relaxed enjoying wonderful entertainment by the Rocks N’ Groynes who sang many of the old favourites. They even got audience participation with two members, Colin Mould and Les Catlin along with Shelia Davies, wife of Peter Davies, joining the group for a singalong.
Steve then proceeded to raise funds using his auctioneer skills and dit spinning to auction off Submarine Memorabelia which had been donated by members and raised a magnificent £320 The raffle then followed, run by Willy Wilmhurst, which made a huge contribution of £240. The members and guests were extremely generous with other doantions which made a total of £862 raised over the evening.
Steve would like to thank all those that attended and supported the event and charities, the RNA for hosting the event, Sue Wallis for providing the buffet and the excellent performance by Rocks N’ Groynes, we look forward to many more well supported social events in 2024.
