Gosport Branch Dit and a Beer

Gosport branch October meeting was honoured to have a ‘dit’ by Robert Whetstone son of the late Rear Admiral Tony Whetstone CB which was followed by beer tasting.

Accompanied by his sister Alison and her husband Mike, Robert visited our branch meeting and gave us a short presentation on the early years in the navy of his father, who was the Gosport Branch President for 10 years until he stepped down in 2015 to be replaced by our present president Captain Chris Groves.

Robert brought with him Tony’s journal started as a midshipman when he joined the navy during World War 2 and gave a precis of his career including how his father became affectionately known as scranbag.  This quick insight was entertaining and hopefully he will return to continue the history lesson from his father’s journal in the future.

In his will, Tony left £500 to the Submariners Association with the proviso that it was to be used to buy wine at the Submariners Association Annual Reunion.

Powder Monkey Brewing Company followed Robert and hosted a beer tasting for the branch.  In good submariner tradition the members had to be told not to drink all the beer before the tasting began. Four beers were offered, and an informative tale was spun about the brewing process, they ranged from a stout to a sour beer which was different to say the least.
