Remembering John Orton ‘a life well lived’.

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar.

Members of the Morecambe Bay Submariners Association were honoured to join John Orton’s family, along with members of the Barrow Branch, to pay their last respects at the Barrow Crematorium on Thursday 14 March 2024, where both Branch Standards were paraded, along with the Morecambe and Heysham Royal Naval Association Standard.

The proceedings were conducted by the Celebrant on behalf of the family, and the President of the Branch, Tim Roberts, delivered the Eulogy in a very moving and fitting Service to mark the end of a life well lived.

John had been a member of the MBSA since February 2002.  Although he lived in Flookburgh, nearer to Barrow, the journey to Morecambe with Tim was easier for him to achieve and so he maintained a long and prosperous relationship with the MBSA.  Attending many social events with his wife Shirley, he made a significant contribution to Branch matters, never to be caught without a dit or 2, he made the long journeys from Cumbria to Lancashire an absolute delight, even causing the Driver to have to stop on occasion because he was laughing so much, he could not really concentrate on driving.

John’s family were appreciative of the presence of such a large group of his friends and associates at the Crematorium and were delighted that we could join them at the Old Farmhouse in Ulverston, where at John’s insistence they were to call ‘Up Spirits’ in his honour one last time.

John passed away suddenly and so the Branch will formally remember him in the time-honoured tradition at the next meeting of the MBSA on 5 April 2024, the family have been informed, and will raise a glass with us on that night.

Yours Aye
